Hi! I see that in the Japanese newspaper there seems to be some
confusion about the Chiba Lotte Marines intent on signing a Korean
third baseman.
That has caused quite some interest in the media. And I just wanted let
our fans know neither I nor Shun Kakazu intended to sign any Korean
players while we were in Las Vegas. An agent for one of our players was
very aggressive in trying to sell his players to us, and have this very
good player be a member of the Chiba Lotte Marines.
As it turns out, the player is a third baseman and we don¡¯t need a
third baseman! Shun Kakazu was trying to act in the best interest of
our team and our owner. In particular Shigemitsu-san is interested in
the Korean Baseball League and the Korean country and if he wanted to
pursue this available third baseman, Shun Kakazu asked for clearance on
his status. This is called a status check, and it makes sure that the
player is in fact a free agent before we get into any conversations
with his agent.
From what we gathered, the KBO announces to the press every time
someone asks for a status check on a player. The Korean Press got very
excited, and jumped the gun and said we were going to sign him just
because we asked for a status check.
We¡¯ve done a status check on many players in other Leagues, and we
never seem to have a problem with it. But at this time, there was some
confusion, and I wanted to clear that up with our fans and our friends
in the Korean Baseball Society, as well as any members of our
organization who might have been confused.
So, once again, many, many conversations are had during Winter Meeting.
There¡¯s a lot of press, many agents, and many people from different
organizations, and the conversations are plentiful.
The one conversation we had with an agent led to a lot of misunderstanding.
Hope everyone understands now! See you soon!
Bobby
